First for all those that attended the Closing Forum...thanks...I am glad you showed.
For the ones that missed it...you missed a great meeting...if for not any other reason...just to really see some of your old classmates...it was great...it is always great seeing some of the old heads...lol old heads and I came out in 90...but anyway seeing and talking with people that actually attended Velt when it was K-12 was wonderful and you know that they bleed true black and gold...I mean the rest of us have loyalty to 3 other schools at least, I have 5.
I attended Holy Angels, Beveridge, Tolleston, Pulaski and Roosevelt...but I also get a chance to say that I have met my fair share of people and learning how to make friends in a new environment is second nature...but anyways.
The meeting basically was about people from the Velt family getting the mic for a couple of minutes and stating why they think Velt should stay open...there were a few that was for the closing if it is going to benefit the community as a hold...there were also people that talked about the strong ties to heritage and knowing that Roosevelt was one of the 2 Schools in Indiana that were considered Black Schools...us along with Crispus Attucks in Indianapolis that closed down as well a few years back but they are realizing that they made a mistake and and are going to re-open soon as a high school..according to Coach Campbell.
After all the people were done talking, a couple people from the school board answered a few questions that were brought up and it was funny how one guy from the audience yelled out..."Close Lew Wallace" and the lady responded with...I wonder what they are going to say when we do this same meeting at Lew Wallace next week...I thought that was funny, really funny!
She also mentioned how the school was crumbling and she even said well look at this auditorium and how a couple spots in the walls look like they could use some touch up plaster...That is something that I believe I saw the last time I was in there...
I didn't get up to speak because I got there late...but I really do feel that Gary School Board needs to do something...and it ain't just closing schools but more on the lines of improving test scores and giving our kids a real chance in the real world.
If you were there what would you had said, had you had your chance to speak...I am curious!
