On the eve of the historic inauguration of our nation's first African-American president and honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for his work toward racial equality and economic justice for all and his commitment to nonviolence, workshops, including several geared toward youth, 9:30-10:45 a.m.; rally with speakers, poetry and music, 11 a.m.; march to the Federal Building, Second Avenue and Marion Street, Seattle, noon; Garfield High School, 400 23rd Ave., Seattle ( 206-353-5770 or 206-296-1002 ).

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade
Parade including Fort Lewis Honor Guard, drill teams, Cleveland H.S. Drum Line, Franklin H.S. Dance Posse, Old Rides Car Club, 11 a.m. from Fourth Avenue and Pine Street via Fourth Avenue to Broad Street, on Broad Street to Thomas Street to Seattle Center, Seattle (www.blackpast.org and click on "events").

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
Volunteer to weed and clean at the former Martin Luther King Jr., elementary school, being renovated as a community center, and other locations in Madison Valley. Bring work gloves, pruners, rakes, shovels, brooms and compostable garbage bags, 9:30-11:30 a.m., 3201 E.
