On that day, we honor Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable, a gentleman born in St Marc, Haiti in 1745. He left Haiti and moved first to New Orleans then proceeded north up the Mississippi river, and started a successful fur trading business. He moved into the Chicago river and built in 1770 on the north bank of that river, in a area called ESCHIKAGOU by the Indians who inhabited the area, a large cabin for his residence, storehouses and barns as well as other structures that became part of a permanent settlement.
That first settlement would later become the City of Chicago, a name derived from the Indian name ESCHIKAGOU. Chicago was officially incorporated as a city on March 4, 1837.
