Red & Black Scholarship Pageant 2009
Are you pageant ready?
The first pageant in IUPUI history was conducted by Black Student Union in conjunction with the graduate chapter of Omega Psi Phi, Fraternity Incorporated; Zeta Phi Chapter. The pageant, Miss Purple & Gold was held before a capacity crowd at the Madame Walker Theatre featuring "Dreamgirl-esque" opening numbers, special performances by the talented dancers from Traci's Urban Jam Dance Studio and we witnessed the crowning of BSU's first pageant queen Travasha Winfrey.
The second year for the pageant, with the bar set so high, a second element was added with the inclusion of male escorts to accompany each lady in their opening number and evening wear scenes. The gentlemen even had their own scene in which they flex their muscle and dance acumen. This monumentous occasion saw not only the crowning of the first Miss Red & Black (the official colors of IUPUI's Black Student Union) but the crowning of the best male escort, affectionately referred to as Mr. Red & Black; respectively the 2008 Miss Red & Black Mutsa Majero and Mr. Red & Black Casey Thompson.
This year hopes to be no different in terms of redefining not only the conventional idea of what a pageant is, but what glamour is as well. We're back to basics with 10 talented ladies competing for over $2000 in scholarships and prizes in an old hollywood glitz style pageant you will not want to miss. So only one question remains...
